Line-up:
The 10th Annual Black
& Blue party in Montreal is the biggest gay party on the east
coast of the continent! Last year it attracted 30,000 people! This
year's event was as well produced as the last five I have worked
on... yet I was disappointed. I did not feel the sense of
community, the "vibe" that I felt in past years.
The main reason for this was that the organisers decided to split
the party into a "Black" room and a "Blue"
room. The Blue room was upstairs in the main stadium but only
occupying about 1/3 of the available space [about 1/4 of which was
the massive stage]. The Black room was downstairs and split into
two segments by the architecture. Last year, the event was in the
main stadium occupying about 2/3 as dance floor and the other 1/3
as chill out area, concessions, massage area, drug harm reduction
and safe sex info booths, etc.
With the event in one room, you get 20,000 people on the dance
floor at once and one is surrounded by gyrating dancers. The vast
height of the stadium roof gives a feeling of spaciousness and
liberty... in the thousands of empty seats above the dance floor,
one can almost imagine the spirits of those gone by who have come
back to shake their heads at the follies of our generation and
it's music.
Laser F/X was again invited by New Wave Productions of Montreal to
supply some of the laser equipment needed for this event.
There was one
spectacular feature of the party this year. Guests entered at the
top of the 3rd level which is very high up in the stadium. Before
them was a glittering sea of thousands of candles flickering on
the floor of the stadium. Rows of red candles in glass jars formed
a giant AIDS ribbon surrounded by rows of white candles.... and to
the further edges, smaller candles flickered and danced. This was
a truly awesome sight and a powerful reminder that the plague is
still among us and has taken many of those we loved. The guests
then descended the stairs and out onto a bridge overlooking the
field and onto the pathways which show as black in the picture
below. Walking through a sea of candles they ended up behind the
main stage of the Blue room with access to the rest of the party.
